It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

…and at Smith Brothers, we’ve got plenty to celebrate this festive season. 2018 has been another fantastic year and – as we prepare for the Christmas break – we’ve been reflecting on the highlights from the past year.

In keeping with the upcoming festivities, we’ve compiled some of our stand-out achievements and events from 2018. We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we did writing them.

January – SNF appointment The year started on a high as we were appointed by world-leading polymer provider SNF, to carry out large-scale electrical engineering works at its first UK-based manufacturing facility.

Having been enlisted as the Independent Connections Provider (ICP) by SNF, we were responsible for the 66kV load connection of the 21MVA site to the Northern Powergrid (NPg).

February – Yorkshire Post’s top SME February set the scene for the rest of the year thanks to Smith Brothers being named as one of The Yorkshire Post’s Top 100 SMEs for 2018! Appearing in a special supplement alongside the business section, the rankings placed us at 76th in the region for profitability.

March – Trio of team members celebrate a decade We said ‘thank you’ to a trio of team members who celebrated a decade at Smith Brothers this year. Craig Collinson, Ryan Smith and Kevin Clough were each given a brand new watch as a token of our appreciation for their efforts over the years.

April – Saint-Gobain Glass appointment We shared the exciting news that Smith Brothers had been appointed by Europe’s leading flat glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain Glass, to connect its East Riding industrial site to the Northern Powergrid (NPg).

May – First awards shortlisting May saw us being shortlisted for the first (of several) awards of the year. We were named as a finalist in the Power category of the Electrical Review Awards, in recognition of the extensive engineering work we conducted at Drayton Manor Solar Farm.

June – Business of the month We rounded off quarter two of 2018 with a bang after being announced as the winner of the Eaton Smith ‘Business of the Month’ award! The regionally-renowned accolade was established in 1995 and has previously been awarded to a huge array of different organisations across Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield.

July – Seven new faces join the team We celebrated seven new faces joining the Smith Brothers’ family in July. Chris McGrath became our newest apprentice, while quantity surveyor Julia Knowles and project manager Steve Wrightson also joined the team.

Last but my no means least, we welcomed four site-based personnel too – fitter and wireman Craig Shaw, cable jointer Andrew Radford, fitter Aneurin Davies and commissioning engineer Darren Cosgrave.

August – Charity work for the local community Sometimes it’s nice to give something back to the community, and over the summer we salvaged a local not-for-profit project and provided charitable domestic supply work for the new Bradley Park community centre.

We were approached by Friends of Bradley Park to help with the activation of their brand-new community hub and provided all labour, cable and equipment free of charge. Our friends as NPS Group also donated a meter housing.

September – New office and new faces Our continued growth and commitment to providing turnkey services saw us open a new office on Parkway Avenue in Sheffield and appoint a four-strong specialist design team.

We brought together 90 years’ combined industry experience with this recruitment programme, which included senior design manager and principal electrical engineer Richard Furniss, civil design manager Steve Sadler, primary electrical design engineer Lee Newheiser, and protection and control design engineer Cat Lucas.

October – It’s a dog’s life The race was on – pardon the pun – for the Smith Brothers team to undertake high-voltage upgrade works at Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium. As Yorkshire’s premier greyhound track, the stadium hosts races almost every day of the week, so a speedy turnaround was key.

We were responsible for connecting a new hospitality suite as well as general upgrade works in just three months, to ensure the wider upgrades could begin on schedule.

November – Huddersfield Examiner’s Business of the Year It’s been another stellar year for the Smith Brothers family, so you can imagine our excitement when we were named as the Huddersfield Examiner’s ‘Business of the Year with over 50 employees’.

In all, we picked up four awards nominations in the space of six weeks, as we were also shortlisted in the Electrical Industry Awards, Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business Awards and Amazon Growing Business Awards – not a bad way to round out the year.

December – The big one! What better way to finish 2018 than to announce our role as the preferred EPC provider on the momentous Arlington Energy portfolio. Work has already begun, so watch this space for updates on the project.

If the past year is anything to go by, then 2019 is certainly set to be another great one. As we prepare for what the next 12 months has in store for us, the office will be closing on Friday 21st December and reopening on Wednesday 2nd January. Don’t panic though, if you need us urgently, you’ll still be able to reach us on 03300 165 191.

So, from everyone at Smith Brothers, all there’s left for us to do is wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
