It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

…and at Smith Brothers, we’ve got plenty to celebrate this festive season. 2019 has been another fantastic year and – as we prepare for the Christmas break – we’ve been reflecting on some of our favourite moments.

January – Putting our best foot forward

There was no such thing as ‘new year, new me’ for Heather and Ryan Smith. The pair of running enthusiasts stepped up their fitness regime after finding out they’d won a place in the 2019 London Marathon!

**February – Happy birthday to us!

From humble beginnings as HV contractors working from the back of their van, 2019 marked Smith Brothers’ 20th birthday. And there was a rather tasty looking cake on hand to help us celebrate – thanks Scriba PR!

Founder John Smith said; “We have 20% of our workforce who have been with us for over 10 years – our success isn’t just down to Richard and myself, it’s testament to our entire workforce and the skill, talent and effort these people have put into the business.” Well done everyone!

March – Smith Brothers wins ‘Business of the Month’ accolade

Rounding off quarter one with a local award wasn’t half bad. We were delighted to find out that we’d been named as ‘Business of the Month for January’ by our friends at Business for Calderdale. What a lovely birthday present!

April – Work begins on first Arlington Energy STOR site

It might have been a long time in the marking, but April saw the Smith Brothers team break ground on the first of Arlington Energy’s energy storage and gas peaking projects – a short term operating reserve (STOR) site in Sheffield, Yorkshire.

May – Dave Ogden takes centre stage at All-Energy Conference Our first, big conference of 2019 saw the team travel north of the border and into Scotland for the All-Energy Conference and Exhibition. Our very own Dave Ogden joined the panel discussions too, talking about our expertise in the clean energy space.

June – Construction commences on second Arlington Energy battery storage site

Summer saw the second of Arlington Energy’s colossal 1GW UK portfolio of energy storage and gas peaker projects begin to take shape, as we began work at a battery site on Greenfield Road, Bedford.

Acting as the independent connection provider (ICP), we were tasked with overseeing all private, contestable, and EPC works relating to the 40MW assignment – from initial design, through to final commissioning.

July – We’re named Eaton Smith’s ‘Business of the Year!’

Granted, this happened in the final week of June, but we couldn’t leave it off the list! Chosen from a shortlist of 12 very worthy Yorkshire firms, the prize followed on from Smith Brothers being crowned as Eaton Smith’s ‘Business of the Month’ in June 2018, with each monthly winner then going head-to-head for the overall prize.

August – We join a framework agreement with Vattenfall Networks

In August, we signed both an Independent Contract Provider (ICP) alliance and framework service maintenance agreement with Vattenfall Networks for the provision of services relating to forthcoming utilities projects.

Dave Ogden, director at Smith Brothers Contracting, said: “As a brand, we are keen to build on our reputation as one of the UK’s leading ICP providers – working with such a respected name as Vattenfall will undoubtedly see Smith Brothers become synonymous with this sector.

“The past two years have seen a significant realignment of our business goals – as such, we have expanded the Smith Brothers’ offering to include ICP, operations and maintenance services. Partnering with leading European energy company, Vattenfall Networks, will prove crucial in writing the next chapter.”

September – Dave Ogden promoted to MD

After seven years with us, Dave Ogden was promoted to managing director. Celebrating 20 years in business, founding brothers Richard and John Smith both confirmed they would remain in the organisation as joint chairman.

Richard Smith, joint chairman said: “Dave has played a key role in developing the business over the last few years and we feel the time is right for him to take on the role of managing director. Both myself and John will remain in the business but will leave the day-to-day operations in his more-than-capable hands.”

October – More renewables news as we’re confirmed as ICP for Sunnica Energy Farm

More exciting green energy news landed in October, as we were confirmed as the provider of turnkey electrical engineering services at the forthcoming Sunnica Energy Farm – a 500 MW solar-plus-storage project.

The clean energy scheme is classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project and, if approved, will be capable of powering around 100,000 homes.

November – Richard King joins Greenhead College’s board of governors

When we’re not working on high voltage connections, we like to give something back to our local community. And, in November, our very own finance director, Richard King joined the board of governors at the prestigious Greenhead College in Huddersfield – one of the most successful sixth form colleges in the country.

December – Life through a lens

Finally, we wouldn’t be where we are without our wonderful colleagues – and we’d like to think they have a pretty great time with us too. Each month, they share some of their favourite photos from the office and life on the road, so we collated a couple of our favourites into a visual blog.

If the past year is anything to go by, then 2020 is certainly set to be another great one. As we prepare for what the next 12 months have in store for us, the office will be closing on Friday 20th December and reopening on Thursday 2nd January.

So, from everyone at Smith Brothers, all that’s left for us to do is wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
