Smith Brothers performs emergency response on 56-year-old transformer
Our services and infrastructure division came into its own recently, as the team successfully regained critical supplies to a local manufacturing facility following a transformer winding fault – getting the site’s electrical infrastructure reenergised within 24 hours.
The transformer in question was manufactured in 1964, so it’s fair to say it’s had a good 56-year innings, but when our engineers arrived on site – and following meticulous analysis – the transformer was deemed to be beyond the state of economic repair.
Due to short lead times, a reengineered, fully overhauled, and certified replacement transformer was the preferred option for the customer. And the clock was ticking…
With that in mind – and within 24 hours of the fault occurrence – the Smith Brothers team was able to safely remove and dispose of the old unit, as well as procure, install and commission the replacement.
The fault response was not without its challenges though, with a 56-metre-long corridor leading to the transformer location. The installation called for new LV cables as well as HV cable joint and termination, all this supported by a 24-month warranty period on the replacement transformer.
We know just how disruptive power outages can be on any scale – which is why we offer proactive and reactive solutions. Please contact us directly for any emergency fault response or maintenance service queries, and we’ll be happy to help.
